Building Community Through Design: Bernardo Wills and Thrive International’s Vision for Inclusive Housing in Spokane

At Bernardo Wills, we believe that architecture is more than structures; it's about creating spaces that embody purpose, foster community, and inspire growth. Our recent collaboration with Thrive International and the Spokane Public Library on a transformative housing project in Spokane’s Shiloh Hills neighborhood exemplifies this philosophy

A Collaborative Response to Community Needsthriveint.org

Thrive International, a nonprofit dedicated to supporting refugee and immigrant families, is spearheading a groundbreaking initiative at 6980 N. Nevada Street. This $10.5 million development will feature 48 mixed-income apartments, with half designated as affordable housing for refugee and workforce families, and the other half offered at market rates . This innovative model aims to foster integration and mutual understanding within a diverse community.

What sets this project apart is its unique partnership with the Spokane Public Library. The library sold the land to Thrive International for $10, securing a 50-year lease for community spaces within the development . This collaboration marks the nation’s first library-private partnership focused on developing new affordable housing opportunities for refugees.

Designing Spaces for Connection and Growth

Our team at Bernardo Wills provided comprehensive architectural and landscape architectural design services for this project. Our goal was to create a welcoming environment that supports both individual well-being and community engagement

Key features of the development include:

  • Community Center: A 1,000-square-foot space operated by the Spokane Public Library, offering educational programs and public events.

  • 24/7 Library Kiosk: An innovative amenity providing residents with around-the-clock access to library materials.

  • Playground and Community Garden: Outdoor spaces designed to encourage interaction and provide residents with opportunities for recreation and sustainable living.

These elements are thoughtfully integrated to promote a sense of belonging and to support the diverse needs of the community.

Sustainable and Inclusive Development

The project’s funding model is as innovative as its design. Private investors, coordinated through Courage Housing, are providing the initial capital, with Thrive International planning to assume full ownership within a decade . This approach ensures long-term affordability and sustainability, aligning with our shared commitment to creating enduring positive impacts.

Empowering Communities Through Purposeful Design

This development is more than housing; it's a testament to what can be achieved when organizations come together with a shared vision. By combining thoughtful design, strategic partnerships, and a deep understanding of community needs, we are helping to create a space where individuals and families can thrive.
