Located on a 30+/- acre campus, service identities include Excelsior Holistic Schools, Excelsior Family Medicine, Excelsior Wellness Center, and Excelsior Integrated Care Center. Made up of a mix of new and existing buildings from the former Sisters of the Good Shepherd School, the site is in full use with redevelopment and remodel expectations to bring the original 1960’s facility and grounds up to current codes while enhancing utilization. Current improvements include 4,800 square feet of new building addition and 10,000 square feet of existing building interior remodel located on two floors.
The overall building encompasses over 75,000 square feet of area to be remodeled.
Since conception, the project scope has widened considerably as community supporters have joined and expressed intent to maximize the use of the site with more under-served community-oriented options from Excelsior. Bernardo Wills worked with ownership and community members to develop a comprehensive master plan that includes a variety of project types and uses. Through the use of planning charrettes, sketch graphics, modeling and video fly-throughs, community members were able to participate and join in the grand vision. As planned the development will incorporate family medicine, integrated care center (regional behavior health), outpatient mental health counseling, wraparound intensive services (WISe+), recreational therapy, after-school programs, multiple residential living accommodations, administrative services, and property management facilities to name a few. The scope of work continues to expand, while the Excelsior vision continues to guide. Excelsior Wellness’ integrated services create balanced healthcare solutions that enable our patients and our community to thrive.

Excelsior Wellness is creating a wellness community that combines housing, mentorship, and workforce development in one integrated model. The project will deliver a three-story, walk-up apartment building with 25 units designed for elders and young adults in transition. Outdoor gathering spaces will anchor the site, encouraging daily connection, mutual support, and neighborhood integration.
Directly adjacent, Gildred’s Garage—Excelsior’s vocational training center—already provides young adults with hands-on experience in electric vehicle conversion and workforce development. By linking stable housing with this mentorship hub, the new community creates a powerful pathway for residents to live, learn, and thrive together.
With demolition of the existing site now underway, the project has moved beyond planning into early construction, marking visible progress toward a neighborhood model that nurtures health, connection, and opportunity.
Named in honor of the late Ambassador Theodore E. Gildred, founder of the Americas Foundation, Gildred’s Garage reflects his legacy of philanthropy and belief in investing in young people. This housing and mentorship community extends that legacy in Spokane, strengthening both individuals and the community as a whole.
