Welcoming Landscape Architect Christopher Barnes, PLA, ASLA

We believe landscapes are more than what surrounds a building. They shape how people experience a place, support ecological systems, and influence how communities interact with their environment over time. That philosophy aligns perfectly with Christopher Barnes, PLA, ASLA and we are excited to welcome him to our team as Landscape Architect.

Chris was drawn to landscape architecture because it brings together the things he values most: a lifelong love of the outdoors, a fascination with nature and earth sciences, and strong visual and spatial skills. For him, the profession offers a powerful opportunity to work at a critical intersection of built and natural worlds. Through thoughtful design, landscape architecture can improve human health, enhance daily experiences, and strategically intervene to restore and strengthen ecological systems.

Chris brings a design mindset rooted in curiosity and continuous learning. One of his greatest strengths is his desire to always push projects forward by incorporating new ideas, concepts, or technologies. Each project becomes an opportunity to learn something new and explore how innovative approaches can elevate outcomes.

He is especially motivated by understanding complex systems and how they interact, whether ecological, social, or infrastructural. By digging into these relationships, Chris enjoys solving design challenges creatively and finding ways to maximize impact within the constraints and opportunities of a site. He values landscapes that function seamlessly while also delivering strong aesthetic experiences that create emotion and leave a lasting impression.

Chris is particularly excited about where the field of landscape architecture is heading. He sees landscape architects as uniquely positioned to address many of the pressing challenges facing communities today, including wildfire and flood risk, water and resource conservation, and climate resilience. Thoughtful landscape design has the ability to respond to these issues in ways that are both functional and joyful, supporting safety and sustainability while creating spaces people love to be in.

Outside of work, Chris continues to draw inspiration from the world around him. He loves spending time outdoors, traveling, and experiencing new places whenever possible. Music festivals and creative expression also play an important role in his life. In addition to speaking German, Chris writes music and hopes to teach drumline again in the future, blending creativity and mentorship beyond the design studio.

We are proud to welcome Chris to Bernardo Wills. His perspective, design leadership, and passion for resilient, meaningful landscapes strengthen our team and expand our ability to create environments that connect people to place in thoughtful and enduring ways.
