Ruby River Hotel: Enhancing the Guest Experience Through Thoughtful Outdoor Design

Bernardo Wills was honored to partner with Ruby River Hotel on a series of improvements designed to enhance the property's eastern edge, creating inviting outdoor spaces for guests while strengthening connections to the surrounding community.
Reimagining the Pool Experience
At the heart of the project was the complete transformation of the hotel's aging pool area. The existing pool was replaced with a new custom-designed pool and hot tub, creating an updated amenity space adjacent to the recently renovated playground.
The design process focused on more than simply replacing an aging facility. Careful consideration was given to how guests would experience the space, from poolside relaxation to family activities and overall site circulation. Material selections, site detailing, landscape enhancements, and screening elements were thoughtfully incorporated to create a comfortable and welcoming environment that complements the character of the hotel.
Through coordination with a team of engineering and specialty consultants, the project also addressed the infrastructure required to support the new pool facilities while ensuring the design met permitting and construction requirements.
Creating a More Welcoming Arrival
In addition to the pool improvements, Bernardo Wills developed enhancements to the hotel's eastern gateway, a key point of arrival for guests approaching from Gonzaga University and the Centennial Trail.
The goal was to establish a stronger sense of arrival while creating an attractive and welcoming transition into the property. The design evaluated opportunities for new planting palettes, landscape enhancements, site furnishings, lighting, and architectural features that would help define the entrance and improve the overall guest experience.
By refreshing outdated landscape areas and introducing new design elements, the project helps create a memorable first impression while strengthening the hotel's connection to its unique riverfront setting.
